White River Valley Electric Cooperative Goes Green

White River Valley Electric Cooperative (WRVEC) embraces the green energy movement and is committed to providing green energy solutions. In addition to energy saving tips, you can always find out more about our latest green energy efforts here.

The Green Power Program

In keeping with our commitment to exploring new ways to provide clean, renewable power to our members, WRVEC is pleased to offer “Green Power,” a Renewable Energy Resources Program to its members. Created in 2004, the program seeks to limit carbon emissions while conserving our natural resources, and yet still providing consistent energy delivery.

What is Green Power?

Renewable energy resources are derived from solar energy, hydro energy, geothermal energy, or biomass (such as nutshells and corn fiber). The energy from these sources is then converted directly to heat or electricity which is then distributed to our members.  Members may purchase electricity under the program in 100 kwh blocks at a rate of $3.50 per block. As many blocks as desired may be bought, but members must make a 12-month commitment to participate in the program. This additional charge will be added to the member’s monthly bill.

There is no noticeable difference in electric service with the Green Power Program. The renewable energy purchased by the members of WRVEC is pooled with other participants from our Generation and Transmission Company, Associated Electric Cooperative, Inc. So while WRVEC cannot guarantee that those very electrons a member purchases through the program will be the same ones that flow through that member’s meter, WRVEC can guarantee that the amount purchased will be delivered on our power grid. By choosing renewable energy, you are supporting the development of renewable energy sources – which is a benefit for everyone.

The Green Power Program is voluntary. Only those members choosing to participate will pay the additional premium. If you’re interested in learning more, just stop by or call the nearest WRVEC office at 1-800-879-4056 or click here to contact us.
