GIS technician – WHITE RIVER CONNECT (branson office)
White River Valley Electric Cooperative’s fiber subsidiary, White River Connect, LLC, is building a robust fiber optic system to service all its members and beyond. This system will connect our communities with a reliable internet service, even in the most rural areas, and will ensure all have access to the most advanced fiber optic system in today’s world. We are building a world-class fiber network that will transform our rural communities just as the Cooperative’s founders did with electricity. White River Connect is currently looking to add to its team of amazing employees the position of GIS Technician.

JOB SUMMARY
As a GIS Technician, you will play a crucial role in the planning, design, and management of our FTTx network infrastructure. Your primary responsibility will be to utilize GIS software and geospatial data to ensure accurate and efficient mapping and documentation of fiber optic cables, network equipment, and customer connections.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Use GIS network management software (e.g., MapCom M4, VETRO Fiber, NISC MapWise) to create, update, and manage geospatial data related to the FTTx network, including fiber optic cable routes, splice points, distribution points, and customer connections.
- Conduct surveys and data collection to identify and map fiber optic cable paths, infrastructure, and obstructions in the field.
- Collaborate with engineering and design teams to ensure accurate placement and design of fiber optic cables and equipment within the GIS software.
- Assist in network analysis and optimization to improve network performance, capacity, and efficiency.
- Generate reports, maps, and visualizations to support network planning, capacity management, and troubleshooting activities.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of fiber optic cable installations, maintenance activities, and network changes within the GIS system.
- Assist in developing and implementing GIS network management standards, procedures, and best practices.
- Provide technical support and training to internal teams on the use of GIS network management software.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in GIS network management software and industry trends.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

- Proven experience working with GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar applications.
- Experience with CAD software.
- Experience with network management software such as MapCom M4 or VETRO FiberMap is a plus.
- Proficient with MS Office products and Google Earth.
- Familiarity with GIS data modeling, network topology, and connectivity concepts.
- Strong understanding of FTTx network architecture, design principles, and fiber optic technologies.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities to collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners.
- Ability to adapt to a dynamic work environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

- State, County, and City Governments – To exchange facility and geographical data as needed with the related departments.
- Computer and Software Vendors – To correspond with as needed to resolve problems and gain assistance relating to the GIS and Network Management platforms.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

- High school diploma, or GED required.
- BS/AS degree in a GIS related field is preferred.
- 1 or more years’ experience with GIS software, preferably in a utility related company.
WORKING CONDITIONS

- Working inside and outside during regular hours and occasional overtime, including weekends and holidays if necessary. Normal safety precautions and practices are required. The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday.

- Frequent physical activity includes sitting at a desk for prolonged periods of time, standing, walking, stooping, bending, lifting, and carrying materials under 25 pounds.

- Capable of operating a personal computer and related software. Must be able to operate office equipment and GIS equipment.
VISUAL ACUITY, HEARING, AND SPEAKING

- Comfortable speaking on the telephone and via online conference tools. Must be able to communicate clearly and accurately for work and safety compliance.
