Three Ozarks youth head to Washington, D.C.

Branson, Mo. – Three area Ozarks youth will represent White River Valley Electric Cooperative and travel to Washington, D.C., with the national Youth Tour from June 14 to 20. Daniel Ramey, Branson High School; Faith Wheelock, Chadwick High School; and Breeana House, Forsyth High School were chosen from 11 finalists at a banquet on April 5 at the Keeter Center at College of the Ozarks.

The other 8 finalists were Tamara Yost, Ava High School; McKenzy Mitchell, Ava Victory Academy; Kaylee Sims, Bradleyville High School; Sydnie Russian, Gainesville High School; John Meyer, Hollister High School; Laura Berthold, Homeschool; Karissa Frealy, Ozark High School; and Allie Kissee, Spokane High School.

High school juniors from participating schools across WRVEC’s five-county service area each submitted an essay or video that answered the question, “If the book of your life were written today, what would be the best story in it that exemplifies who you are and who you hope to be? Please tell it and explain.”

One winner from each participating school was chosen by a panel of three judges. The first round judges included Carol Bruneau-Malson, school and library volunteer; Patricia Schweitzer, teacher; and Dr. Curt Gilstrap, Director of M.A. Communication, Drury University.

Each of the 11 finalists took a quiz about electric cooperatives and presented their essay or video in front of friends, family and a second panel of judges at the banquet. The second round of judges included Jim McCarty, Association of Missouri Cooperatives; Mike Marsh, Association of Missouri Cooperatives; Janet Ellis, KRZK radio personality; and Lonnie Tucker, Cuivre River Electric Cooperative. At the closing of the evening the three winners were announced.

Ramey, Wheelock and House will join more than 1,400 other winners from electric cooperatives across the country for an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., where they will tour national monuments, visit with elected officials and experience government in action.
