WRVEC announces rate adjustment

Branson, Mo. – Effective March 1, 2013, White River Valley Electric Cooperative is implementing a rate adjustment which will affect electric bills by approximately nine percent. That change equals about $10 for the average residential member.

Additionally, the minimum bill is changing from $25 to $28 and with this change we will no longer give 20 kilowatt hours with the minimum bill.

“Although a rate increase is never a popular decision,” CEO Chris Hamon said, “There are times when a rate adjustment is necessary to maintain the financial stability of the cooperative.”

Since the last rate adjustment in April 2009, WRVEC has experienced a rise in wholesale costs and mild weather that led to less kilowatt hour sales which means costs have to be spread over less revenue. In addition, material and fuel costs have increased and most recently the Leap Day tornado caused hefty damage and great expense for WRVEC.

Members can expect their March bills to be prorated based on their billing cycle. Statements mailed in April will reflect the first full month of use at the new base rate.

It is important to remember that WRVEC is a not-for-profit organization which means that the cooperative will not adjust rates to generate profits. White River’s mission is to provide safe and reliable electricity.
